SS-31 is a four-amino-acid peptide that concentrates at the inner mitochondrial membrane, binding a fat called cardiolipin. Research has examined it for effects on mitochondrial energy output and oxidative stress in cell and animal models.
Research overview
SS-31 (elamipretide) is a four-amino-acid peptide that binds cardiolipin, a lipid found almost only in the inner mitochondrial membrane. That selectivity is why it is studied where it is: cell and animal work on how efficiently mitochondria produce ATP, and on tissue damage from reactive oxygen species in kidney, heart and muscle models. It has progressed further into human trials than most compounds in this catalogue.
